Raised in the country by a hard working father and creative mother, Gina’s art experiences began as a young girl, crafting and painting around the kitchen table with her sister.

Through the years she chose to develop and refine her artistic skills via lessons and online instruction. Her formal training is in the field of education, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Gina worked in public education for 19 years, including 14 years of classroom teaching and 5 years as a school district instructional coach. She worked for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt as a virtual instructional coach for 3 years.

Landscape with Perspective Beginner

Learn how to use elements of art (color temperature and position on the picture plane) to create perspective in a landscape watercolor painting. Students will be encouraged to think about and discuss how they feel about their work, and how they can express their feelings effectively. (Templates will be provided, as needed)

Explore color theory by learning how to mix primary colors into secondary colors. Learn what positive and negative emotions various colors represent. Use self-drying clay to create a sculpture to express your feelings or practice phonics skills.

Whimsical Watercolor Birds

Learn how to decide upon what is most important in a work of art (Focal Point) and emphasize that portion of the artwork. Students will explore relationship skills by discussing how the birds might be interacting with one another. (Templates will be provided, as needed)

Poetry Made Visible

Use oil pastels and watercolors to create an artwork that expresses the scenes and culture of the Southwest as seen through the eyes of a Mexican-American girl in the artistic style of Enrique O. Sanchez, inspired in the children’s book Confetti: Poems for Children, written by Pat Mora and illustrated by Enrique O. Sanchez. Learn watercolor techniques such as color mixing and shading, and oil pastels blending. Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), and language development through Artist’s Statement Sentence Frames.

Emotional Lion

Create a lion with lines and shapes. Presenter will provide cut-out templates for the basic shapes, which students will trace around before coloring. Students will consider which emotion the lion might be expressing (anger, frustration, surprise). and discuss how to better understand others’ thoughts and feelings. (standard crayons or watercolor crayons).

Watercolor Exploration

Explore a diverse range of watercolor techniques designed to ignite creativity and offer practical classroom applications: combining ink with watercolor for added contrast and detail, creating texture using plastic wrap and sea sponge, utilizing masking for inventive compositions, and mastering the art of ‘lifting’ to craft clouds and enhance highlights. Unleash creativity by crafting artworks and compiling a take-home book.
